Lena is a Partner at Oraro & Company Advocates in the dispute resolution practice group specialising in tax.  She advises corporate entities in tax compliance, domestic and international tax, value added tax, income tax, capital gains tax, transfer pricing and tax litigation. 

She has represented clients in the Tax Appeals Tribunal (TAT) and at the Kenya Revenue Authority to specifically address tax disputes. In cases where an unfavourable decision is made Lena has represented clients before the High Court and Court of Appeal. Lena also provides tax advisory as a result of mergers and acquisitions, capital markets transactions, business restructuring, and banking and finance transactions.

Lena acted for a Kenya mining company in a matter that involved an assessment raised against the company in respect of VAT, withholding tax and corporation tax. She also successfully represented the Tourism Promotion Services Limited in a tax dispute before the TAT.

Lena holds a Masters in International and European Tax law from the University of Maastricht, Netherlands and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the Catholic University of East Africa. She is also a Certified Public Accountant CPA (K).

  • Successfully represented Bidco Africa, in an appeal against an Income Tax assessment at the High Court. (2018)
  • Successfully represented Kenya Fluorspar Company Ltd in an appeal against VAT, withholding tax and corporation tax (resulting from an intercompany transaction) assessment at the Tax Appeals Tribunal. (2018)
  • Successfully represented KRA in an appeal against Mastermind for excise duty assessment, at the Court of Appeal. (2017)
  • Successfully represented Vivo Energy and its related companies in an income tax appeal at the High Court (2015)
  • Successfully represented Vivo Energy and its related companies in an income tax appeal at the High Court (2015)
  • Represented Tourism Promotion Services Ltd in a tax dispute before the Tax Appeals Tribunal that was successfully settled through Alternative Dispute Resolution. (2016)
  • Acting for a Kenya-based holding company that manufactures both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in numerous appeals against excise duty and value-added tax assessment on alcoholic beverages at the Tax Appeals Tribunal.
  • Representing a Kenyan mining company in an appeal against VAT and Income Tax assessment at the High Court.
