Oraro & Company Advocates is pleased to announce that it has officially adopted the Gender Equality in Law (GELC) Model Policy, a flagship initiative by the Institute for African Women in Law (IAWL) aimed at promoting gender equity within the legal profession across Africa.
The GELC Model Policy is a comprehensive framework that addresses key areas including protection from sexual harassment, equal pay for equal work, equitable hiring and promotion, and the elimination of gender bias and stereotypes in legal workplaces. Rooted in international and regional human rights instruments such as CEDAW, the African Charter, ILO Conventions, and the AU Agenda 2063, the policy guides firms in fostering inclusive, safe, and empowering work environments for all.
As the first law firm in Kenya to adopt the policy, Oraro & Company Advocates reinforces its longstanding commitment to equal opportunity, merit-based progression, and meaningful representation of women in law.
Pamella Ager, Managing Partner at Oraro & Company Advocates, said:
“We are honoured to be the first law firm in Kenya to adopt the GELC Model Policy. This decision reflects our deep-rooted commitment to fostering a legal environment where every individual, including women, can thrive without bias or barrier. At Oraro & Company Advocates, we believe leadership means setting the standard, and we are proud to be at the forefront of driving real, institutional change.”
The firm’s adoption of the policy qualifies it for a Certificate of Adoption from IAWL and recognition through its GELC Alliance, alongside other pioneering law firms across Africa. Oraro & Company Advocates will also benefit from expert resources including research briefs, training toolkits, and opportunities for continental collaboration.
This milestone reinforces Oraro & Company Advocates’ commitment to excellence, inclusion, and progressive legal leadership, setting a precedent for others in the profession to follow.
